Segmented ducting elbows

Segmented elbows serve the purpose of changing the air flow direction in the ducting.  Segmented elbows are subject to increase abrasion wearing by the extracted material. The elbows can be arranged into three basic groups:

Segmented elbows :

Segmented elbows are part of the dedusting system in which the direction of the airflow is changed. When the flow is changed, the dust particles are carried along the outer elbow arc where the particles hit the individual segments. This is a point of increased abrasion by the extracted material. It is necessary to count with this undesirable phenomenon, and select an elbow type in such a way that the longest possible life of the elbows is achieved.

Segmented elbows types by their radius:

  • Segmented elbows  with a radius of 1D
  • Segmented elbows  with a radius of 1,5D
  • Segmented elbows  with a radius of 2D
  • Segmented elbows  with a radius of 2,5D
  • Segmented elbows  with a radius of 3D

The choice of a suitable radius of the segmented elbow is an important part of the design for a balanced dedusting system. Generally applies: the bigger the radius, the smaller the pressure drop and wear. From the budget point of view, the opposite applies: the bigger the radius the bigger the investment cost. The designer has to choose a compromise in the components to make the system functional and feasible.

Other factors the designer must take into account are:

  • Airflow velocity inside the elbow
  • Extracted material characteristics – amount, granulometrics, abrasivity
  • Total vacuum or overpressure of the system
  • Disposition of space
  • Pressure resistance (ATEX)
  • Price of the segmented elbows
