In industrial dedusting the design of straight piping is always chosen with relation to the extracted material and the amount of vacuum inside the ducting. To simplify, the piping design can be arranged into three basic groups:

Ducting pipes are sorted according to their diameter and by their pressure resistance into Group I, Group II or Group III. Below are the basic models for each group.

Load on ducting

If we speak of load, we mean the load caused by pressure or vacuum in the extraction system and the abrasion caused by the extracted material. In order to choose the right straight ducting type in industrial extraction, it is necessary to take into account more operational factors than just the norm recommendations. Most important conditions and influences that determine the selection outcome:

  • Airflow velocity inside the elbow
  • Extracted material characteristics – amount, granulometrics, abrasivity
  • Total vacuum or overpressure of the system
  • Disposition of space
  • Pressure resistance (ATEX)
  • Price of the segmented elbows

When selecting the extraction ducting – pipes, the operating pressure/vacuum in the system is important, because the abrasion effects are minimal in the straight sections.

Please note that joining the individual pipes of Group I, Group II and Group III is done only with flanged joints. This also applies for spiral ducting of Group I which is normally joined using insertion joiners fastened with rivets or screws. This method is almost never used for extraction and dedusting systems, since these joints are a very frequent cause of clogging in the pipeline routes by clogging and acumulating the sucked material behind the insertion joiner or the inner nut/bolt part. We recommend to join the SPIRAL ducting using a standard flanged joint with a  protrusion around perimeter of the spiral ducting.

We have prepared a basic table for the use of ducting types, depending on the extracted material, which gives examples of the use of different types of ducting parts (branches, reducers, elbows) for applications in industrial dust extraction that are known to be working in practice.
